Big Spring Fire Transitioned to Type 4

Mountainair, NM – July 4, 2008: Management of The Big Spring Fire was transferred yesterday from the Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team to a Type 4 organization. Two twenty person hand crews along with several engines have remained with the fire and will continue mop-up as well as fireline rehabilitation.

A lightning storm passed over the Manzano Mountains and Estancia Valley last night. Fire personnel will be heavily patrolling throughout the weekend and responding to any smoke reports.

Mountainair Ranger District personnel as well as Torrance County Dispatch have received several calls yesterday and today regarding smokes within the Big Spring Fire perimeter. These smokes are expected to periodically appear as stump holes continue burning. Fire personnel will be mopping up these areas when and wherever appropriate

The Mountainair Ranger District is currently under Stage 3 restrictions. The only area currently open for picnicking is Red Canyon Campground which is open for DAY USE ONLY (8am to 6pm.) There are currently no hiking opportunities on the Mountainair Ranger District.

The Mountainair Ranger District is currently closed for the holiday. Fire personnel will be out of the office patrolling around the Forest. To report a new fire, please call the district office for instructions on how to reach the 24 hour dispatch. The Mountainair Ranger District number is 505-847-2990.

ALL FIREWORKS ARE PROHIBITED ON THE NATIONAL FOREST!
