Just A Thought - What if Mountainair Post Office Closed

Recent news stories have talked about closing down post offices in rural areas of the United States.  As a thinking person, I have wondered about the possibility of our post office in Mountainair being closed.  For what it's worth here are my observations;

1.  Post offices in communities that surround Mountainair have been renovated over the past several years and our post office has not.  Why wouldn't our post office be renovated?

2.  We have had several Post Masters over the past several years - not a long term person in place.  Various articles I have read over the past two years indicate that one point of consideration in closing a post office is how close the Postmater of that office is to retirement.  Why hasn't our post office been staffed with a long term Postmaster?

3.  Transactions - additionally, the articles that I have read regarding closures indicate that the USPS tracks the amount of daily transaction each post office handles.  If the volume of daily transactions drops below a certain amount, the location can endure reduction in employees and if the numbers are to low, is another key point in decision to close a post office.

Based on the lack of upgrade to the Mountainair Post Office location, the length of time our Postmasters are assigned and without knowing how many transactions our post office handles on a daily basis, and as a thinking person, I wonder if our post office is on the short list for closure.

Communities where closures have already happened or will be closed this fiscal year till have mail service.  Instead of a staffed post office, mail is delivered to cluster boxes - if you need to buy stamps, ship packages, certified mailings etc. you would have to trust the cluster box and order those things in advance leaving money and packages in an unattended cluster box.  Alternatively, you would have to travel to a staffed post office somewhere else - not a pleasant thought from any angle.

We need our post office and it would help eliminate one of the closure check list criteria if all of us could mail a letter or card a week.  So, I am proposing a letter a day/week campaign - if each and every one of us would buy a stamp and mail something from the Mountainair post office, that would help keep their transaction numbers up and eliminate on of the closure check list items.  If you have a package to send, please consider using the Mountainair post office, encourage local business's to do the same.

We have enough residents and as a community we can raise the income for our post office and show the federal government that our community exists and that we need our post office to be kept open.

Just a thought.
